The experts home and aboard gathered in Xiamen and discussed the issue on protection of whales and dolphins

       On 8th, near to 40 experts from USA, Japan, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other countries and regions gathered in Xiamen to attend the “2009 International Workshop on Protection of Whales and Dolphins in China (Xiamen)” and discuss the issues about protection of whales and dolphins.
       This workshop is sponsored by Xiamen Oceans & Fisheries Bureau and organized by The Third Institute of Oceanography, SOA, with the purpose of promoting the extensive exchange of research and protection of whales and dolphins all around the world, expanding the domestic and international influence of Xiamen, especially in the field of protecting the Chinese White Dolphins and proving the effective methods and measures for rescue and scientific research of Chinese White Dolphins. At the same time, this workshop will provide a good international cooperation platform for Xiamen to establish stable inter-regional cooperation mechanism. The contents of the workshop refer to the ecology and protection of whales and dolphins population, protection genetics of marine whales and dolphins, behavior and acoustics of marine whales and dolphins, protection and management in nature reserves of marine whales and dolphins.
        Around the theme of “protection of whales and dolphins”, the participating experts provide constructive opinions and suggestions for coordinative development between protection of whales and dolphins and local economy from the respects of marine science, and social science and so on. They appealed: to effective protect the Chinese White Dolphins, the regional cooperation should be developed, the advanced technology should be introduced, and the rescue network for Chinese White Dolphins should be established.
After the workshop, the participants would examine the National Nature Reserve for Chinese White Dolphins in Xiamen.
